Outstanding, and I do think that females get together and plot against us poor guys.

Reading this story for the second time. I noticed that you keep mentioning a Norwegian Ridgeback in Harry's recollection of the first task of the Tri-Wizard tournament. He went against the Hungarian Horntail. Norbert (Hagrid's baby) was a Norwegian.

You are, of course, correct. You are also the first reader in three years to spot this boo-boo. You are hereby granted an indulgence to eat the cookie of your choice, committing the calories to me.

When I was young, my family had a Saluki named Nuri... he lived from about '78 to '89 or '90. More aloof than an average dog if you didn't know him but endlessly loyal if you did. Best dog I've ever known.
Not really a point to that, I suppose, but thanks for making me think of him. :)

Why can't Ginny just be bloody obvious and truthful and say "Harry, if you would like me to be more than just a very good friend, I just thought I would tell you that I am not dating Dean. I just said that to get the great bloody prat off my back. It's your move, now."
Why be devious? This is Harry and he would appreciate simple truth and not any manipulation.
Kokopelli replied:
I'm not sure you really want a reply. The short answer is that if Ginny did this, we'd have a lot shorter story. The long answer is that per canon, Ginny is a deceptive person who is a gifted liar (not very attractive traits IMNSHO) and liars, when caught, try to bluff their way out.

I can not believe that Harry closed the door on Hermione like that. If I got a letter like that, my response (unless I really understood what a nosey, pushy, nagging, know-it-all Hermione is) would be to respond "No, I don't think I could be that lucky. I think she has her eyes set on another Griffindor in our year." I still do not know what canon!Hermione sees in Ron. I could see Tonks, Ginny, and Hermione all having a go at Harry. Other girls, maybe, but Harry does not go out of his way to meet or talk to anyone, much less other girls.
Kokopelli replied:
If I were Harry, I'd be all over Hermione in a heartbeat, but I'm not.
Per canon, Harry's closest friends are Ron, followed by Hermione.
Per canon everyone can see that Ron fancies Hermione.
If Harry were to snatch Hermione from under Ron's nose, we could expect that action to totally rupture Harry's friendship with Ron - which was much worse than the estrangement he had from Ron during GoF.
I don't write harem fics - if you're looking for those, check out Kinsfire.
Per canon, Hermione is Harry's friend - I've had lots of girls who were my friends, who I thought to be reasonably attractive, but I didn't want to jump their bones or pledge my troth to them.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Even with a future unanswered and more of life to come, this tale ends with quite a sense of completion and satisfaction.
Excellent work.

One of the most unique battles in Harry Potter fanficdom.
And it follows a number of great interpersonal letters, conversations, and diary entries.
Very well done indeed.

You pack so much 'good-stuff' in each chapter.

This was hysterical:
"Oh, by the way, Ginny, I think I fancy you and I’d like to get to know you better. You know those dragons that we both have, yours on your wrist and mine in my head? They think that you’re supposed to bear my children. Be a good girl now and shuck your top off so I can nip you on your back, yeah, right there between your shoulder blades. You can resist if you want, it’s a traditional part of the game."
Fascinating insight into to Ginny by way of her diary.

As fascinating as swords are, canon mentions them little, other than to kill the basilisk.
I like that you have Harry learn swordplay, but only as a part of the whole, and not to the level of a master duelist. That would be a waste with magic available. This way you've given him one more tool in his arsenal.
Great detail.
